Have Yourself a (fake) Merry Little Christmas

The first holiday season after a break-up is difficult at best. Do you go to holiday parties where some people you know may not know what’s happened and you have to tell them about “The Split”? Of course, it wasn’t “a split” at all. You got left for some (probably younger) woman. But these are not the truths that make-up Holiday Party Talk. Or, you are introduced to people you’ve never met. They ask if you’re married and you say no. And that may be a really difficult two letters to say, especially if you’ve been in the relationship for a long time. I get it. I know around the holidays, all kinds of issues come up. You want a “Happy Holiday”, but your heart and head keep pulling you back to the “What Ifs”.
What to do? Here’s some advice from a woman who’s been there – Fake It. Even on the days you are really blue and miserable, I want you to act like you are happy. Yes, I’m telling you to fake it. To fake it to yourself. Instead of wallowing. Get up. Get dressed. Go out to lunch, or shopping. Smile at people at that holiday party as if you are in the best mood and having a fantastic day. Why, you say? Why am I suggesting this? Because my dear, you’ve been miserable for so long, you need to actually practice how to be happy. You need to change the face you show yourself and the world.
You’ll see. People will react differently to this “happy” you. (No one’s seen her for awhile.) They will smile and say hello. And little by little you will learn to like how this feels and you will want to actually BE this person you’ve “invented” – The Healed You. You will become her. I swear that practicing this works over time. And you really do start to get out of the Holiday Doldrums and into the Holiday Spirit. So, Have Yourself, A Merry Little Christmas…NOW!

We all go through major life transitions when relationships end… Through this website, I will share my thoughts as I walk the path of “New-Self” discovery. It doesn’t matter which side of 50 you are on. The real question is, Are you ready to live life? To forge a Path of Your Own Making (For a change!)? Then stop dwelling over the What-Might-Have-Beens and join me. Share your thoughts here, comment on mine, and let’s do this together!
