Shooting stars, 4-leaf clovers, Lucky Charms. These are just a few of the things people believe can change their emotional or actual fortunes. After all, someone has to win the lottery, right? Though time and again our faith in such things is proven wrong, we continue to give them the “benefit of the doubt.” The “million to one chance” that maybe for once, we can be The Winner. Cause, “Winners” take all, right?
Hmmm. In reality, not so much. I bring up these ideas of luck and fortune, not to degrade them or say only fools believe in them, but rather to show you how strongly the “power” of a Talisman is ingrained into our popular culture. Many people, especially athletes believe in them. As do the folks who can’t board a plane without their baby blanket or poker chip or whatever makes them feel safe in a situation they have no control of.
We Leftat50’s probably don’t believe in these things so much anymore. The road of our lives took a really unexpected turn, and we felt cheated that our “Talisman” let us down. I used to believe in such things when I was younger. But now, having lived through being cheated on and left after 24 years, and coming out the other side, I believe I am my own Talisman now. I contain my own “magical properties” just by the fact that I relied on myself to rebuild my heart and my life. I accomplished this! I did not know I had the strength to truly remake my life but I did. Starting over at 50, what I first thought was so terrifying, turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me. I can truly say I am my own Lucky Charm! So when times are tough remember, so are you.
