Why am I writing about National Pencil Day, you may be asking? For me, it’s about the symbolism of writing your life story in lead instead of ink.
When I was in my relationship, I thought our union was a permanent thing – written in ink. Then I was walked out on. Hmmmm, it seems it was erasable ink!
In the aftermath, I, like all of you, have had to decide to “write” a new story for myself. And I’ve chosen the pencil method of symbolically starting my new chapter. Because when electronics fail, a pencil will always work. So even if I find someone and it doesn’t become permanent, I can carry on. Why heck, I can erase the whole darn thing if I choose!
I think the eraser end may be the greatest part of pencils. Symbolic or not. There is freedom in the semi-permanence of my future penciled-in story. I feel like the pressure to do everything perfectly in Relationship Land is off.
My Dear Leftat50s, whatever life-plan we may have written down in our hearts and minds in our past relationship can now be erased. What a gift it is to let that all go.
Yes, you are allowed to take an eraser to the entire thing. If you want to.
I promise you that when you do, you can take the empowering and symbolic step of sharpening your life-pencil and starting all over again! When we were children and a test was over, our teacher always said, “Pencils down.”
On this National Pencil day take a second and realize you and I have the gift of starting another new chapter and so for us, it’s “Pencils up!”
We all go through major life transitions when relationships end… Through this website, I will share my thoughts as I walk the path of “New-Self” discovery. It doesn’t matter which side of 50 you are on. The real question is, Are you ready to live life? To forge a Path of Your Own Making (For a change!)? Then stop dwelling over the What-Might-Have-Beens and join me. Share your thoughts here, comment on mine, and let’s do this together!
