Use Your “Oprah Effect”

The “Oprah Effect”. That is actually a term. Because if Oprah endorses something, people buy it. Remember when Oprah started her magazine and she was on the cover? And then it was revealed that she intended to be on EVERY cover of EVERY issue of “O” Magazine!

People went nuts! “No one has ever done that!” “The audacity of putting your self on the cover of every issue!”

And then, it flew off the shelves.

Then, she started the OWN network. Again, people freaked out. “She named a NETWORK after herself?” “Who’s going to watch that?” “That’s going to fail and cost her her entire fortune!”

And after a few rough months, she found her footing and now everyone just accepts that there is an OWN network, and if they want inspirational programming, they watch it.

Why am I blathering on about all of this? Because it got me to thinking. What if I did my own version of that? What if I envisioned putting myself on the cover of my own issue of my own magazine? What would the articles be about? What do I most care about? What am I interested in at this stage of my Diane Life?

And what I found was, it was really hard to find myself on the cover. It seems like someone or something else was claiming my cover spot. You know, financial worries deserve the cover, or a nagging Ex should be promptly displayed, or my friends and their concerns should perhaps take a nice group shot and adorn the cover of Diane magazine.

Wow. What a realization. I not only let others crowd me out of my own life, but truth be told, I would hate looking at myself on the cover of Diane magazine every month. So much pressure to look perfect. Pressure I put on myself. So much so, that I could not even enjoy the fantasy of being on the cover of my own imaginary magazine! Oh my. It seems I have a ways to go in the self esteem department.

I ask all of you Leftat50’s, if you had your own magazine, what would make the cover of Your Life Monthly? Pick out your outfit now, and start posing. Because all of us should be as confident as Oprah about touting the wonderfulness our own lives.

I think when you do, you will realize how much your thoughts and actions are wonderful, and how they effect so many other peoples’ lives. So if someone is doubting you and your ideas about who you are, just ignore them. Smile inside yourself at your “your name here” effect and then go do whatever the heck you want!!

We all go through major life transitions when relationships end… Through this website, I will share my thoughts as I walk the path of “New-Self” discovery. It doesn’t matter which side of 50 you are on. The real question is, Are you ready to live life? To forge a Path of Your Own Making (For a change!)? Then stop dwelling over the What-Might-Have-Beens and join me. Share your thoughts here, comment on mine, and let’s do this together!
